I have listed the following foods for 6+ months. This is not always because they are not recommended before then but also may be because they are more difficult to mash/ puree and are therefore liable to contain much larger lumps which a younger baby may not be able to cope with. For this reason the foods on this page are not the best first foods if you are starting weaning at 6 months and wish to feed your baby a smooth puree. Please refer to the 4+ months recipes for suitable foods in this case.
Mushrooms
Wash a large handful of button mushrooms. Chop into small cubes and fry in olive oil until soft.
Place in blender and blend until the desired consistency is reached (adding boiled water if required).
Note mushrooms are not really suitable for mashing unless your baby is very competent with lumps.
Beetroot
Wash 6+ large beetroot and remove stalk/ leaves if applicable, taking care not to damage the skin.
Boil the beetroot in water for about an hour (cooking time can be reduced by using smaller beetroots but remember to increase the quantities). Test the tenderness by sticking a sharp knife or pointed object into the beetroot - it should go in fairly easily.
Remove the beetroot from the water and remove the skin by rubbing gently (this is quite a messy job so be near running water and have a cloth handy. Be aware that beetroot juice can stain.)
Mash or puree, adding boiled water if required to reach the desired consistency.
Green Beans
Take a large handful of green beans and top and tail if necessary (i.e. remove the stalk-like end and the flowery end) or buy ready prepared beans.
Boil or steam the beans for about 10 mins.
Place in blender and blend until desired consistency is reached (adding some of the cooking water if required).
Peas
Measure out about 5 cubes (280 ml) of fresh or frozen peas (this should make 3-4 cubes when mashed).
Boil or steam for about 5-7 mins.
Mash or puree, adding boiled water if required to reach the desired consistency.
Raspberries
These do not need to be cooked, neither do the seeds need to be removed.
Simply measure out about 5 cubes (280 ml) of raspberries and mash until the desired consistency is required.
if you use frozen raspberries, you will not be able to re-freeze but you could make a smaller amount and keep in the fridge for a day or 2.
Chicken
Take one chicken breast or approx. 200grams of chicken. Cook the chicken until there is no pink flesh and the juices run clear when a knife is inserted. (can be grilled, roasted or boiled).
Place in blender with 150mls of chicken stock (the cooking water left over from your chicken if you do not have ready made chicken stock available. Do not use stock cubes as these contain salt) and blend until desired consistency is reached.
Note the consistency can be altered further by adjusting the chicken to stock ratio.
Tip: I find an alternative, easy solution to this is to roast a whole chicken and have the breasts for dinner with your partner. Use half the chicken that is left over for baby. To make the stock place the carcass with the rest of the chicken into a pan of water. Bring to the boil and then simmer for about an hour or more. Remove the chicken and sieve the stock (cooking water) into a jug which can then be kept in the fridge.
Pork
Take approx. 200grams of pork. Cook the pork until there is no pink flesh and the juices run clear when a knife is inserted. (can be roasted or boiled).
Place in blender with 150mls of chicken stock (you can use the cooking water left over from your pork if you do not have ready made chicken stock available. Do not use stock cubes as these contain salt) and blend until desired consistency is reached.
Note the consistency can be altered further by adjusting the pork to stock ratio.
Tip: I find an alternative, easy solution to this is to have roast pork for dinner with your partner. Use the left overs for baby's meal. As chicken ought to be introduced before pork, you can use some of the chicken stock that you will have made up for the chicken recipe above.
Lamb
Take approx. 200grams of diced lamb. Boil the lamb in water for about 40-45 mins until tender.
Place in blender with 150mls of the cooking water.
Note the consistency can be altered further by adjusting the lamb to stock ratio.
Lamb Casserole
Place approx. 100grams of diced lamb, half a carrot, half a parsnip, 2-3 diced cubes of marrow and a sprinkling of herbs (parsley, rosmary, sage) into a casserole dish.
Add 400mls water or chicken stock and cook in the oven at 180C for 40-45 mins. Alternatively you could boil the whole lot in a pan on the stove.
Pour everything into the blender and blend until the desired consistency is reached.
Suggested food combinations
Prepare all foods as above and mix cubes together in equal quantities (or as you wish depending on which flavour(s) you wish to be prominent in the meal). If you defrost 3-4 pots of savoury for each day, you can mix and match at lunch and tea without duplicating the meal exactly. For example: sweet potato, broccoli and carrot could make sweet potato, broccoli and carrot for lunch (one cube broccoli + spoonful each of carrot and sweet potato) and carrot and sweet potato for tea (the balance of the cubes). This works better when baby's appetite increases but can be adapted for earlier by filling the cubes to a lower level than the 70ml max.
